What do you think of the reationship between Thomas and Victor?
The movie Smoke Signal is about two boys named Victor and Thomas. Victor' father Joseph saved Thomas from dying. He saved Thomas life by getting him out of his burning house where both of his parents died because they didn't escape from the burning house. Victor's father was an alcoholic and was abusive towards his wife. He left his family when Victor was very young. After Joseph died of a heart attack Victor was sent to Phoenix, Arizona to go and pick up his father ashes and belongings. Victor does not have enough money to go on the trip to Arizona, but his neighbor Thomas does. Thomas and Victor went on the trip by a bus, when they were on the bus people where looking at them like they were from a different planet. At that time Thomas met a girl and she was telling him false stories. Victor told Thomas not to trust people. Thomas and Victor did not had such a good relationship prior to the road trip. Victor taught that Thomas was very annoying and I guess you can say weird. He also follow and ask Victor questions. The road trip had made them became very good friends, they learn to understand each other.
Its amazing how one trip can changed the way a person feels or think about an individual. I feel like I can relate to them, I had a classmate which at first I thought was the annoyingest person I have ever met end up being one of my closest friend. We shouldn't judge anyone before we really get to know them.

The point you make about judging others before you get to know them is important and has a lot of meaning for this film. I think Victor judged Thomas but Thomas did not judge Victor.
ReplyDeleteHi Sophay,
ReplyDeleteYour point that Victor and Thomas learn to understand each other on the trip is strong! Watching the film again this week reminded me how much Thomas pursues Victor’s friendship. Maybe because he’s reflective and a storyteller, Thomas seems to recognize the ways he and Victor are connected; in order to be a friend, Victor first has to find peace with his father.
Thanks for this great point to consider!
Lauren :)
i think you hit the nail on the head. its amazing how one little trip can change something. I think after the trip they were more like friends instead of a brotherhood relationship
ReplyDeleteI agree with you that the most annoying person you find.may end up being your best friend. That happened to me in high school and i am still friends with them ove r ten years later. Victor learned the hard way though because it took the death of his father to see thomas as a friend.
ReplyDeleteYou mad a very great point at the end of your writing. I feel that people do judge people way to much. And I did it once to. And now she is my best friend.
ReplyDeleteI really like how you related your writing to your own personal life. I also think that this trip that Victor and Thomas went on together, made their relationship better. They learned a lot from each other and even though Thomas was a little anoying, they ended up as better friends.
ReplyDeleteyah i agree i thik u made a very good point at the end of your response. i also thik that going on a road trip or being around someone for a great amount of time can change the way you see that person!! good response!

you make a very strong point! People are always judging someone before they even really know what they are like. I believe that even though Victor and Thomas are different they realize they can learn from one another, which can be very helpful for them.
