What's your response to Mr. Harvey?
Mr. Harvey seems to be very straight forward to his students. He address his feelings and thoughts very negatively. Instead of in a professional way its more of a personal level. It seems like he wants his students to be speaking proper English which is great because in a professional society when you're working you shouldn't be using slang. I don't believe his method of teaching is too successful because he's not inspiring the kids but putting them down.
It makes me wonder how Mr. Harvey was brought up or what make him think this is the right way to educate your student. Teachers needs to learn to be very patient because not all students are on the same learning level, some might take longer than others to understand something. Mr. Harvey needs to understand that if he wants to help his students he needs to learn to help himself first. Obviously his method is not working but instead is scaring his students away.

Hi Sophay,
ReplyDeleteYour points about teachers needing patience and needing to learn to help themselves are great! I wonder if Mr. Harvey also needed some flexibility to meet his students where they are and then help them access school language. It seems to me that he just expects them to already know standard English and has no idea how to teach his students how to speak and write it.

Sophay,
ReplyDeleteI agree with you that it is important not to use slang and to learn proper English. It is the teachers job to teach and not to judge. I cannot imagine a teacher in Santa Rosa getting away with this behavior today. It is a shame that mr. Harvey scared the kids and made them feel stupid.
I agree with your thoughts. His proffessionalism is not there. I think he is used to dealing with smart white kids and not used to helping different students wih different learning levels.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you, I also believe that Mr. Harvey's way of teaching his students proper english is not the right way. Maybe that is the reason why his students have trouble learning from him. Maybe if was to find a better way of teaching his students, his students would actually learn.
ReplyDeleteI was wondering the same thing on how he was brought up. He has such a negative feeling about his students and makes me also wonder if he was always that way or does he need to retire. When you are in a place where people are used to speaking a certain way its going to be hard to get them to turn around so quickly. Great response.
ReplyDeletei agree with alot of your thought on Mr. Harvey.. i also wondered how he was broguth up? i really just dont think he understood the kids..i think he thought they should already know how to speak proper english.

I agree with you that is what I thought of Mr. Harvey. I do think he is very negative and in a way it makes the students really scared and I feel like he should be like there friend and help them out instead of being so hard on them.
ReplyDeleteI agree with what you have to say. I believe Mr. Harvey is too harsh towards his students and he needs to understand that it takes time to learn and speak a certain language.
