How is educational a means to save one's life: How is Alexie attempting to save the life of the students he works with? How did Alexie save his own life?
Educational is a means to save one's life its because educational gives individuals more opportunities. With more opportunity you're able to do more of what you want to do and not being limited or stuck to what someone else decides or think its good for you. In Alexie story, educational gave him an opportunity to be who he wants to be, not a typical Indian boy that lives on the reservation and have his life predetermined for him. Alexie attempt to change the lives of the students he works with by visiting them and educating them how important education is. With the reservation school system he was never taught how to write poetry, short stories, or novels. He wants to inspire them to become what they want to be, not be what other chose for them to be. Alexie saved his own life by following his dream. He knows that he's not stupid so he's not going to pretend that he is. He has a passion for reading, he read everything including cereal box. If Alexie didn't do what he did and went along with the reservation school system by following the foot step of those before him, he would never be where he is now by this Alexie saved his own life.

Hello Sophay
ReplyDeleteI liked what you had to say about Superman and me. You understood and wrote about the heart of his story. I noticed a few grammatical errors in your essay that slowed down my reading. Sometimes it helps to have a friend look over your work. I happen to be very bad at grammar and have my husband check over my work before I turn it in. He catches all kinds of errors I didn't see and helps me to think of the best way to correct them.

Hi Sophay,
ReplyDeleteThe point you make about being able to decide for oneself is an important theme in the story. Alexie is coming from a context in which his "future" is already decided, should he accept that path. He refuses that path, and decides to choose for himself. It's empowering to determine our own futures, and it's amazing to think that this choice isn't presented as a possibility to everyone. Thanks for the ideas!
Lauren :)
I agree with lauren, I liked your point of being who you want to be and not letting other people choose your path. It is important for kids to understand that, and having a role model like Alexie who has been in their shoes and show them that they can be and do what ever they set their mind to is a powerful thing.
ReplyDeleteHi Sophay
ReplyDeleteI agree with the points you made about education. If it wasn't because Alexie choose to educate himself, he would have been that typical Indian boy like you said. But he pushed himself to do something great out of his life. Now he is helping kids reach their dreams as well.
Hi Sophay,
ReplyDeleteI agree with the point that education is of great importance, Alexis was a strong soul and did not let anyone stop him from getting a great education. He has given his students a great opportunity to suceed in their futures.
I like the way how you explain education and agree with you. This is because everything you said about education is very true. Education does give you more opportunities and changes your life.
