What's the importance of forgiveness in "Smoke Signals"? How does Victor learn to forgive his father?
To forgive someone is to forswear resentment, anger, or other reactions to their having done something that justifies such responses. In the film "Smoke Signals" Victor was living a life fill of anger and resentment cause by his father who left him and his Mom when he was very young. He see his Dad as an abusive, alcoholic person. Throughout his childhood and early teens Victor basically shut everyone out of his world. He had his guards up, just having a really hard time trusting others and being able to be himself. Through his journey to Arizona to pick up his father ashes we went with one of neighbor which is soon to be his friend Thomas. Thomas tried very hard to get better relationship with Victor. Victor just did not seem to have a personality. Even though Thomas can seem to be annoying but he was always there to lend a hand. On their trip there they met someone on the bus at the moment he was already saying she is a liar. He have a problem trusting people from his own personal experience. When they arrived to the trailer where his father passed away he spent a moment thinking and looking around. He saw a picture of him and his family that his father had kept. Written on the back was the word "home." That moment Victor was starting to loosen up about how he felt for his father. He was starting to let his guards down. Victor learn to forgive his father by cutting his hair which is a symbolic sign of forgiveness. He is cutting out the past and looking towards the future. He can finally be himself and not have his past memories haunt him and stop him from being the person who he wants to be.

I like the statement of cutting the past and looking to the future in regards to the new hair cut. I think its a strong point when he did see that photo in the trailor. I think his father really did love him and the family but he just had an alcohol problem and to fix that he just ran away,
ReplyDeleteYour draft is really a good start to talking about forgiveness in the movie. Victor did shut everyone out which lead him to be hard on Thomas. Your draft was clear on what you were trying to say. forgiveness is important because you dont want to live with resentment for the rest of your life. Great job
ReplyDeleteI like your rough draft. I think that you made some good points. You are right, a lot of people don't know how to forget and they live with the resentment for the rest of their life and its harder because they get really abusive and emotional.

ReplyDeleteYou have a great start. I think this is an interesting statement that could be further develop: To forgive someone is to forswear resentment, anger, or other reactions to their having done something that justifies such responses. When you are doing your final editing remember to keep your tenses consistent.
