Who is Makot? Do you feel sorry for him? What are your thoughts about him and the way he copes with his parents?
Makot is a young teenager whom only plays with kids younger than him. His family was the only Japanese family in Filipino Camp. In a sense I do feel sorry for him and the other hand I don't. The reasons why I feel sorry for him is because none of the older boys his age is willing to play with him. They make fun of him and they make it clear that he is not wanted in their group. Makot have no choice but to play with the younger kids. In a way it seems like he have to brie them to be friends with him by buying them chow mein, ice cream, etc. The reason why I don't feel sorry for him is because of the behavior that he carries with his mother. I do not like how he speaks and treat his mother. No child should shove their mother and tell them to shut up. He is very disrespectful, that is probably the reasons why the older kids don't want to play with him. Or maybe that is why Kiyo's parents don't want him to play or be around Makot. It was shoking to me that Makot's mother did not react to the way Makot was disrespecting her. The relationship that Makot and Kiyo have with their parents are opposite. Even though Kiyo does not obey everything that his parents tell him to do but he would never dear to disrespect his parents.

Makot does show abuse to his mother but because of what the story says about his parents maybe they have abused him or maybe he has always had to fend for himself. this could be the reason he likes kids younger than him because he can boss them around. Makot is definitely a character that will give us more action in this story.
ReplyDeleteSophay,
ReplyDeleteI agree with your observation that Makot is disrespectful to his mother. His mother is an intriguing and problematic character in the text; she's silly, always dressed up, and her profession is only hinted at. (Her husband doesn't work, the family has lots of food, money and a nice car, she's dressed in expensive kimonos, and there are men hanging out in the shadows near their home.) The text only hints at the reason Makot is disrespectful. Respect is a theme of the book, and I agree that Kiyo and Makot contrast in their relationships with their parents; Kiyo is not verbally disrespectful.
Thanks for giving me these points to think about.
Lauren :)
I agree with you that I feel sorry for him but I dont for the exact reasons you talk about. It is bad that no one his age will play with him and he has to find younger people to play with by buying things for them. He is very rude to his mother and it isnt a great way to have a relationship with the person who brought you into this world. Great response to the question.
ReplyDeleteYes I agree with you but what I don't really understand is why others say that Makots parents are bad. I think that their is a reason maybe why Makot acts like that towards his mother. It seems like his parents are hardly at home becuase the kids are always over at his house and his parents aren't.
ReplyDeleteSophay,
ReplyDeleteI agree that I do not feel bad for Makot. His behavior is rude and without regard for anyone. I believe he selects younger kids because kids his own age would not tolerate his behavior. I wonder why the group calls him the king. He may require it of them. Kiyoshi is a good kid trying to find his way between tradition and what his friends are doing. Peer pressure is hard and the enticement of running around shooting slings and bb guns is a lot more exciting than waiting for someone to bring a bll to play basketball with.
I like how you state your reasons of why you don't feel sorry for Makot and why you feel sorry for him. I also find it very disrespectful the way he talks to his parents. His parents might be a big part to why Makot treats them that way. I guess we have to keep reading to find out.
ReplyDeleteHi Sophay, i agree with you that Makots disrespect to his mother is absolutely wrong. But, the reasons that he may act things way to this mother are valid points. He comes from parents who do not show him the affection he needs, only give him money. Also, his mother being a prostitute and his father always being absent gives him lack of respect for his parents.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with you. I feel bad for Makot and the fact that no one his own age wants to be friends with him, therefore he finds younger kids to hangout with and buys them things to keep them hanging around. I'm not sure why they say makots parents are bad people. I'm interested to finding out why.
ReplyDeleteI also agree with you, I feel bad for Makot but there is no reason for hs behavior. He probably is rude to his mother because he has never gotten the respect he needed from her and that's his way of acting towards to her. It could be that there was never any bounding with his parents because they were always busy making a living in the way they only knew how.
